Proceedings of the September 1983 INTDS workshop at Argonne (CONF-8309127, OSTI 6487125): the heavy-ion-era target-engineering volume, and this collection's best single source on target heat load and beam damage. Four invited machine papers (ATLAS, GSI UNILAC, HHIRF, Chalk River TASCC) frame what beams do to targets; Folger's GSI survey is the centerpiece — beam-power arithmetic (~208 W total, 1 kW/cm^2 focused, for 3e11/s of 17.5 MeV/u U), rotating target wheels phase-locked to the macropulse (666 rpm, ~1e17 particles integrated without damage), a disc that survived 1 uA of 15 MeV/u Au at 1333 rpm but melted when the drive motor stopped (SEM sequence), C/Pb/C sandwich targets, in-beam thickness/damage monitoring by scattering-peak width, plus GSI production statistics across rolling, carbon sublimation, focused-ion-beam sputtering, and evaporation. Three recorded discussion sessions (stripper foils; heavy-ion target problems; general targets) preserve floor-level practice: slackened-foil ~10x lifetime, overcoats that shunt heat and charge to the frame, Cu-overcoat protection of lithium, substrate heat-sinking. Contributed papers cover thick enriched-Si evaporation with a cooling/heating stress-control recipe (Hinn), O-ring foil stretchers (Radford), saddle-field sputter sources with measured rates (Thomas), stretched metallized polypropylene windows (Dmytrenko), self-supporting rare-earth films (Yaraskavitch), cellulose-membrane durable oxide targets (Quinby), CVD tungsten and a stripper-foil chain feeding a cyclotron dee stem (Gallant), storage-ring solid-target thickness limits (Lozowski), and a vacuum target-storage system (Nardi & Worthington).
