Cyclotrons2019 conference paper (TUP035) describing the centre region of a new Sumitomo Heavy Industries superconducting AVF proton-therapy cyclotron with a 3 T field, a 2.8 m diameter yoke and a centre region packed into about 0.2 m diameter. The internal source is a simple hot-cathode PIG with a floating anti-cathode that reflects the thermal electrons. Because the heated filament at 3 T feels a strong Lorentz force from its own current, which the authors expected to deform it, the source was converted to AC filament heating, which they credit with making a hot-cathode PIG usable in that field. On a superconducting test magnet at 3.2 T with static extraction the source gave up to about 300 uA of H+, and the published curve shows a strong dependence on filament current (178 A vs 180 A) at each arc voltage. Filaments are treated as consumables: a mechanical drive under the cyclotron withdraws the source without breaking vacuum. The paper also gives the first-gap arrangement (50 kV between source and puller, first orbits around 15 mm radius), dee and counter-dee electrodes, an electrostatic vertical chopper that dumps unwanted beam within four turns below 1 MeV, phase slits and vertical dumpers, a centre-region probe at 42 mm radius used for Smith-Garren phase measurement and source monitoring, and centring coils exploiting the first field harmonic placed in one valley pair. Component tests were pending at publication.
